GENIUS OF DANCE No. 3
“Within the ‘La Danse’ series at the Opéra Garnier, the ‘Genius of Dance’ has resulted in one of the most successful editions, as it is the subject that best reflects the overall spirit of the group. Love run amok, leading the six Bacchantes, is enough here to capture the outburst of joy and the vitality of the genius. The slender physique of the genius – that of a 20-year-old carpenter, Sébastien Visat – isolates and reinforces the movement’s original momentum. His face, modelled on that of the Polish princess Hélène de Racowitza, perfectly expresses the joy of the ensemble and, by lending the figure an androgynous quality, imbues it with a unsettling dimension that is present throughout the entire group.
