Restorations
Our painting is a repeat of the work by Robert Campin, also known as the Master of Flemalle (active in Tournai from 1406 to 1444), now in the Philadelphia Museum of Fine Arts (see A. Châtelet, Robert Campin, le maître de Flémalle, Anvers 1996, no. 8, reproduced). Christ is depicted as Salvator Mundi (Saviour of the World), a popular iconographic theme in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. In this type of representation, Christ appears head-on, raising his right hand to bless the viewer, while his left hand generally holds a globe symbolising the world, which is absent in our composition as in the one from Philadelphia.
