King’s Bodyguard Helmet, 1st Model, 1814–1815 Helmet, visor and neck guard in black patent leather. Crest decorated with feathers and acanthus leaves at the base, palm motifs on the helmet, a plaque depicting a radiating sun with a human face beneath a royal crown, framed by the royal cipher, the whole set against a background of clouds and a banner bearing the inscription ‘NEC PLURIBUS IMPAR’; scale-patterned chin straps lined with black napped velvet and silver-plated copper. Radiating bossets decorated with motifs of suns with human heads in silver-plated copper. Chin strap fastenings in silver-plated trimmings, with tassels and fringes. Mane in black horsehair. Silver-plated plume holder. Inner cap in leather with a black silk lining. Plume of white feathers, with a silver-plated base in the style of the period, at the rear.
