BLONDEL & MELLY, Geneva Ultra-flat gold (750) POCKET WATCH, known as the ‘A la Turque’, featuring rich chiselled and engraved decoration on the cover and bezel, depicting foliage scrolls within a multi-lobed medallion. The white full-field enamelled dial features Ottoman numerals and is adorned with two small straight hands. The dust cover is signed and numbered 14287, as is the lid. The lugs are chiselled with a laurel wreath encircled by a small flower. 19th century Diameter: 40 mm; Gross weight: 55 g (Hands damaged; movement not guaranteed and probably a replacement) Denis Blondel and Antoine Melly, Swiss clockmakers active in Geneva from 1820 to 1850, are reputed to have produced the finest timepiece intended for the Ottoman market. Since the 17th century, Switzerland has been the leading country for the production of timepieces for the Ottoman Empire.
