Ferdinand KAUFFER (1852-1891), Nancy - Lorraine. A neo-Gothic vermeil ciborium (950/00 - Minerve), with a four-lobed base decorated with enamel depicting Saint Charles Borromée, Saint Joseph, Saint Louis and the Virgin Mary. Between each of the medallions are chased vine shoots, reeds, ears of wheat and lilies, symbols both of the sacrifice of the mass (bread and wine) and of purity. The brass counter-piece is engraved "Sainte-Marie à l'église Saint-Joseph de Nancy - 1890" and "Fait par Fd Kauffer, orfèvre à Nancy". Sainte Marie refers to the educational institution then founded by the Sisters of Sainte-Enfance-de-Marie who had settled along the railway line. Height: 24.5 cm. Total gross weight: 759 g. Damage to the enamels and the bowl in particular, missing parts including the lid.
