A work by the French painter, lithographer and poster artist, it is characterised by vivid colours, dynamic movement and joyful female figures – the famous ‘Chérettes’ – who embody the festive spirit of the Belle Époque. Here, we see a reimagining of the Commedia dell’arte as a gallant celebration, depicting Pierrot playing the mandolin amongst the chérettes
The label might suggest that the painting was exhibited at an exhibition or art fair, reminiscent of Robinot Frères, who handled the packing and transport of works of art for official art fairs, major retrospective exhibitions or auctions in the late 19th or early 20th century
