A pendant known as the ‘Butterfly Cross’, crafted from sterling silver (800) and 18-carat gold (750), comprising three articulated, cascading elements, decorated with small flowers and lace motifs, set with table-cut diamonds in a closed-set massé setting. A regional piece from Normandy dating from the late 18th to the first half of the 19th century. Gross weight: 12.90 g. Dimensions: 6 x 4.5 cm. A silver chain (800e) is included. Weight: 8 g. Known as the ‘butterfly cross’ due to its silhouette evoking the insect’s outstretched wings, this cross was worn in Normandy between 1770 and 1840, but also in the regions of northern France, where it is known as the ‘Flemish cross’. This name stems in particular from the annexation, between 1795 and 1815, of Belgian territories by France, first under the First Republic and then under the Napoleonic Empire.
