French school, circa 1900. A young woman in a hat chatting with a horseman. In the background, a procession of horses and elegantly dressed people. Charcoal and watercolour on cardboard. 74 x 55.5 cm. Minor imperfections. The staircase in the right-hand background is reminiscent of that at the Grand Palais. The event would therefore appear to be the famous Paris Central Horse Show (“L’Hippique”), held at the Grand Palais since 1901 and attended by the cream of Parisian society.
