Paul-Elie DUBOIS (1886–1949). Hoggar (Algeria). Large oil on hardboard, signed lower right, inscribed with the location and dated ‘38’. 114 x 146 cm. There is a pencil sketch on the reverse.
Paul-Elie Dubois was a French ethnographic painter, originally from the Doubs region, associated with the School of Algiers, and winner of First Prize at the 1944 Salon in Paris.
In 1938, he persuaded his wife, Henriette Dubois-Damart, to accompany him to the Hoggar for a second expedition: “For ten years, I had been longing to see it again…, and I rediscovered the enchantment. The grandeur of the jagged mountains moved me once more. The unchanging pastoral life of the encampments...” (Paul-Elie Dubois in a note to his father).
It is worth noting that the figure of the young Tuareg woman sitting cross-legged in the background on the left, holding her child, appears in a watercolour by the artist, dated 1938 (Elisabeth Cazenave, Paul-Elie Dubois, Peintre du Hoggar, Editions du Layeur, 2006, ill. p. 100).
