Description
Michael MANN (died c. 1630), Augsburg or Nuremberg. A remarkable casket, unfortunately damaged and incomplete, comprising a bowl on feet, made of gilded brass etched with medallions depicting female saints (Catherine of Alexandria, Mary Magdalene, Barbara of Nicomedia, etc.) or religious scenes (the Nativity, the Baptism of Christ); beneath the basin, a depiction of Saint Martin of Tours (shown wearing a mitre on horseback, which is rare and, all things considered, inaccurate, as the scene is set at a time when he was still a Roman legionary), sharing his cloak with a poor man. Of the lid (to be reattached), the backing plate and the remarkable 8-bolt locking mechanism remain (with minor imperfections). Also present is the plaque bearing Michael Mann’s signature. Circa 1600–1620. 10.2 x 6.9 x height 5.4 cm. Key missing.
