Description
LOIR in Paris (17th century). Large pewter dish known as ‘à la cardinal’, the rim decorated with an engraved coat of arms, beneath a helmet with lambrequins, azure with a gold lion holding a sword (this may refer to Louis Blanchardon, 1647–1728, counsellor-secretary to the king, special master of waters and forests for the Generality of Tours, and later captain of the hunts in Maine. The Renoul family in Brittany also bear this coat of arms). Hallmarked twice “Etin fin / I. LOIR [ship]” on the reverse. Circa 1650. Diameter 46 cm.
Provenance: purchased in May 1993 from Thierry L’Huillier, an antique dealer at the Carré Rive Gauche, 42 rue de Verneuil, Paris; subsequently part of the former collection of Prof. Alain Larcan (1931–2012), Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour.
