Description
VATICAN. Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem (reorganised in 1847). Rare knight’s insignia, breast model (prior to the 1978 reform permitting it to be worn around the neck), comprising, within its embossed case featuring the Cross of Jerusalem, the medal beneath a coat of arms (width 37 mm), the miniature (diameter 11 mm) and the lapel pin (diameter 13 mm).
Provenance: Dr George J. CRANE (1893–1966), USA. Dr Crane, a leading figure in Catholic education and charity, was the founder and first headmaster of the highly renowned Bayside High School in New York from 1936 to 1951. He was a Knight Grand Cross of the OESSJ and a Knight of the Sovereign Order of Malta (see obituary published in the New York Times). These breast insignia are rare, as most knights had them altered in 1978.
