PERREAUD (François). Demonology, or a Treatise on Demons and Sorcerers, and Their Power and Powerlessness. Together with *L’Antidémon de Mascon*, or the True Account of What a Demon Did and Said a Few Years Ago in the House of the Said Mr Perreaud at Mascon. Geneva, Pierre Aubert, 1653. 2 parts in one in-8 volume, soft vellum (contemporary binding). Rare first edition (uncollated, cuts across several leaves and other cosmetic flaws) The French pastor François Perrault, or Perreaud, was a member of a Huguenot family from Gex who had emigrated to Geneva. In the first part, he argues for the reality of devils and witches, referring to numerous authors such as Bodin, Erasmus, Pico della Mirandola, Machiavelli, Montaigne, Wier, etc. In the second part, he recounts his own experience during which a demon tormented his entire family for three months in Mâcon in 1612. Stanislas de Guaita, who believed the work had never been reprinted, described it as “of remarkable rarity”. Ph. Leduc, in his reprint of *L’Antidémon* in 1853, states that the book “was already very rare in the last century. Baillet, La Monnaie and Abbé Papillon spoke of it only from hearsay”.
