The ship “Ville-de-Bordeaux” in distress.
Charcoal and chalk.
Height: 57 cm. Width: 96.5 cm. (Stains and minor imperfections).
Handwritten inscription on the reverse: “The ‘Ville-de-Bordeaux’ in distress off the coast of Brest. Commander Denis Félix Paqué” (Nantes, 1822 – Roscoff, 1899).
Provenance: Manoir du Léon.
The “Ville-de-Bordeaux” was a 90-gun mixed-armament vessel launched at Lorient in 1860. It took part in the Mexican campaign before being used as a prison for the Communards in Brest in 1871–72. Renamed “Bretagne II”, it was assigned to the School for Novices and Apprentice Sailors between 1880 and 1894.
