GEO-FOURRIER (Lyon, 1898 – Quimper, 1966) Georges FOURRIER, known as ‘Gwenola la Bigouden’, 1939 Wood engraving. Titled and numbered 16/100 in the lower left-hand corner. Signed and dated in the lower right-hand corner. Engraved and produced by the publisher Takamizawa, in Tokyo. Height: 36.5 cm. Width: 25.5 cm. Visible. (Pinholes). Print exhibited in 2003 at the Musée de Pont-L’Abbé. Geo-Fourrier collaborated with Takamizawa on four prints, including our ‘Gwenola’. He would send his gouaches to the Tokyo-based publisher. These, passing through the hands of Japanese master engravers, were transformed by that incomparable Japanese spirit. One print is currently on display as part of the exhibition “Geo-Fourrier: An Adventurer Explores Quimper Faience”, being held at the Quimper Faience Museum. It is accompanied by the following commentary: “[these works] were certainly, for Géo-Fourrier, an achievement, a source of great satisfaction, perhaps even a culmination”.
