Description
René-Yves CRESTON (Saint-Nazaire, 1898 – Etables-sur-Mer, 1964) – Marine painter in 1936 On board the “Pourquoi-pas?”. Plate No. IV, enhanced with watercolour by the artist. One of 250 copies. Height: 30.5 cm. Width: 20.5 cm. As seen. (Paper uniformly yellowed). This plate is taken from the book *Charcot and the “Pourquoi-pas?”*, printed in an edition of 250 copies in 1948. It is described as follows: “Album of 18 plates enhanced with watercolour and a text by R.-Y. CRESTON / Member of the Charcot Expedition to Greenland (1933)”. “On 15 September 1936, Charcot, the members of his expedition, and his entire crew—save for one man who was miraculously rescued—vanished off the coast of Iceland aboard the legendary ‘Pourquoi-Pas?’. A former companion of Charcot, R.-Y. Creston has brought together in this album the main documents he once collected on the life of the great explorer aboard his ship, on the ship itself, and on the Arctic regions visited and explored by the *Pourquoi-Pas?* expedition. This album is not only a tribute to the great man who is no longer with us and his companions, but also an accurate and vivid account of the man who was known as ‘the polar gentleman’. It has a rightful place on the bookshelves of all those who love the sea and who cherish the memory of Charcot and the *Pourquoi-Pas?*.”
