Jules DUBOSCQ (1817–1886) Table mirror on a tilting stand, stamped ‘JULES DUBOSCQ’ Adjustable convex mirror for experiments with light or to widen the field of view France, 1850–1880 D. 32 cm – L. 40 cm – H. 62 to 72 cm (slot) Note: Jules Duboscq was the son of a luthier; in 1849, he took over the business of Jean-Baptiste Soleil, a manufacturer of scientific and mathematical instruments. At the start of his business, he adopted the trade name Duboscq-Soleil. Quickly gaining a reputation for his creations, the firm became known as Duboscq or J. Duboscq. He was responsible for a large number of inventions in the field of the study of light, such as stereoscopes, cameras, magic lanterns and electromagnets… In 1883, Duboscq went into partnership with François Pellin, who added his name alongside Duboscq’s in the company’s signature, and the firm became Duboscq-Pellin. Upon Duboscq’s death in 1886, the company became Pellin.
