Description
A long brass alidade ruler with two alidades (fretted in shape) secured by hooks and hinges.
The central section of the ruler, which features an opening, bears two measuring scales divided into sections of 130 and 120, comprising 6 and 7 lines respectively.
Each side has an opening allowing the instrument to be used as a viewfinder.
The centre features a brass plate and the reverse side is left blank.
The instrument comes with its original carrying case made of wood covered in studded leather and fastened with two hooks.
The engravings and decoration are of fine quality, with asymmetrical openings for the measurements.
Probably French in origin – late 17th – early 18th century.
