Antoine PONCHIN, a painter from Marseilles who came from a family of artists, belonged to the Provencal school, which paid particular attention to the effects of light and the landscapes of the South of France. A pupil of Jean-Baptiste OLIVE, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des artistes français from the 1890s, where his landscapes won him several awards. Although he later travelled to Indochina, where he went on an artistic mission with his son Jos Henri Ponchin, he remained attached to the shores of the Mediterranean and the light of Provence.
