Description
Léon Bakst - Natalia Goncharova for The Firebird, a ballet costume for the role of a Belibotchki by Serge de Diaghilev's Ballets Russes Circa 1926. Four-piece wool suit with bloomers, corset and two long-sleeved undershirts. Stitched and notched wool felt appliqué with hand-painted finish. Unbleached cotton canvas lining and original hook fastening. Inside labels mentioning role and distributions. Soiling, small stains and rust. L'Oiseau de Feu Firebird premiered on 25 June 1910 at the Paris Opéra by Serge de Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. This famous ballet by Michel Fokine, with Igor Stravisnky writing the score and Léon Bakst's sets and costumes, assisted by Alexandre Golovine, was first performed in London in 1912. It was revived in 1926 in costumes designed by Natalia Goncharova, the probable date of this costume, whose analysis of the textile materials belong to the inter-war period. Last performances with Goncharova's costumes at Covent Garden, Royal Opera House in 1954, where the labels for the role of Belibochki were affixed with different casts including Burrows and then Niblett. The last photo is that of a sketch not supplied and for documentary purposes. Natalia Goncharova (1881-1962), a leading figure on the Moscow art scene before the First World War, was invited by Serge Diaghilev to design the sets and costumes for the Ballets Russes production of Le Coq d'Or. In 1914, this opera-ballet premiered in Paris and London. Goncharova's innovative approach to Russian folk art, her knowledge of contemporary French painting and, above all, her sense of humour enabled her to become a mediator between the Russian avant-garde and the West.Expert: Serge LIAGRE
