Description
Very large wall-mounted mask
Wood, with an aged brown patina, showing signs of wear, small cracks and localised weathering.
Nepal, Lowlands region (Terai), probably the Rajbanshi area.
Height 62 – Width 40 cm
The face, remarkably expressive, features large, elongated eyes, a prominent nose with flared nostrils and an open mouth revealing the teeth. The imposing crown is carved with floral and ritual motifs, including several trishulas, attributes associated with Shiva.
In the Lowlands of Nepal, large wooden masks form part of ancient traditions of village dances and ritual performances. They give form to deities, heroes and demonic figures drawn from major Hindu narratives as well as local beliefs. Worn or displayed during community festivals, they form part of a sacred theatre in which the mask temporarily embodies the power of the character being portrayed.
