The recent exhibition at the Musée Condé in Chantilly led to the rediscovery of a work by the Italian Master.
Our version is an example of the tradition of disseminating Renaissance paintings throughout Europe. This copy, painted on copper, shows Pontius Pilate in the guise of a healthy man with squared-off eyes, symbolising his ignorance of the consequences of his act, represented by this open hand richly adorned with jewels. Christ is depicted in a complexion typical of Flemish painting. This contrasts with the rich red cloth, enhanced with gold, of the Christ's sheath. More than a copy, this work is a discreet testimony to the influence of the Italian Masters on European painting in the 17th century.
