History: Our painting was commissioned by Louis-Philippe during the July Monarchy, funded from the King’s civil list, for one of his residences.
As is often the case, the commission commemorates a glorious event in the future King’s career. In this instance, it depicts the rallying of retreating French soldiers at the Battle of Quaregnon (29 April 1792) led by the young Louis-Philippe, Duke of Chartres, who was appointed lieutenant-general the following day.
The painting was begun by Victor Adam, but it remained unfinished when the regime fell (1848).
The statement of accounts settling the debts owed to painters for commissions placed by the former Royal Civil List (1852) lists our painting as having a value of 1,200 francs at the time of the commission, of which no amount had been paid before 28 February 1848 and 800 francs after that date.
The painting is indeed marked ‘Unfinished’ in the remarks section of this statement.
The work was taken up again and completed by Eugène-Antoine Guillon, a pupil of Flandrin who exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1861 to 1914.
