Description
Mende or Bassa mask-shell Finely sculpted facial features, animal horns, braids and a two-part crest at the top. Decorated with metal bands wrapped around the horns and small decorative elements on the crest. A large amount of raffia is attached around the edge. In good condition, the whole piece has a dull, dusty patina due to the context of a sanctuary. A large piece is missing under the chin and there is a crack and erosion on the left side of the head. Height: 39.4 cm (15 ½ inches), raffia not included. Sierra Leone/Liberia, first half of the 20th century. Provenance: - former collection of Dr Richard and Jan Baum, Los Angeles, California. - former Jeremiah Cole collection, Liberia/United States. - Heritage auction, 9 November 2023, lot #70412.
