Indian statue in carved and painted wood
Depicting a robust, bearded figure wearing a richly decorated costume and holding a bow. Probably from a festival chariot.
Mounted on an acrylic stand with screws on the back.
Height: 96.5 cm (the wood) and 137 cm with the base.
Provenance :
- Former collection of Ambassador David Morgan Bane (1915-2004), probably acquired between 1961 and 1964 when he was Consul General in Lahore, Pakistan, or before his retirement in 1975, his last post being as Consul General in Mumbai, India.
- Freeman's, Philadelphia, Auction 5411, 9 April 2024, lot 183.
Condition Report: Surfaces soiled, abraded to extremities, one fingertip missing, wrist fractured/repaired, crack to lower corner of panel, narrow crack to top of cap, light flaking and soiling to paint. Paint retouching to top of head and extremities. Some insect damage to the back. Scratches and abrasions on the acrylic base.
