Description
Unno Bisei (1864-1919) Portraits of the Meiji Emperor and Empress Pair of repoussé silver portraits. Japan, circa 1890. 22.5 x 16.5 cm each (framed 39 x 33 cm). In their original stained oak frames, decorated with the imperial mon above each portrait, and bearing on the reverse the red seal of Unno Bisei and the inscription Meiji tenno son kei [Respected figure of the Meiji Emperor]. Both frames are preserved in their original wooden boxes (showing some signs of wear). Bisei was a talented silversmith who held the title of Artist of the Imperial Household. He exhibited at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1890 and collaborated with London silversmiths. These portraits were given as ceremonial gifts to foreign dignitaries or political figures.
