Description
Unno Bisei (1864-1919) Portraits of the Meiji Emperor and Empress Pair of repoussé silver portraits. Japan, circa 1890. Acquired from the Meiji Shrine around 1920. 23 x 16 cm each (framed 38 x 33 cm). They are framed in matching wooden frames, decorated with a gilded imperial mon (the chrysanthemum). The silver is oxidised and the frames show some marks. On the reverse are the original labels (that of the Empress is torn): the red seal of Unno Bisei and the inscription Meiji tenno son kei (Respected figure of the Meiji Emperor). Both frames are preserved in their original wooden boxes (showing some signs of wear).
