Fragments of a Qur'an in bihari style
Illuminated manuscript on paper from a large Qur'an, once bound in several volumes.
60 leaves, a column of 15 lines in bold black bihari script, the word Allah in red throughout the text, other key words from the Qur'an highlighted in red and blue in the margins, an illuminated title in gold on a blue background, a text panel decorated in white and gold, a large circular motif in blue, gold and red (bordered), two gold medallions marking the verses.
The leaves presented here come from three distinct groups of texts, comprising: 1- al-Baqarah (II) verse 143 to Ali 'Imran (III) verse 141 (30 leaves), 2- at-Towbah (IX) verse 107 to Yusuf (XII) verse 50 (12 leaves), 3- ar-Ra'd (XIII) verse 2 to an-Nahl verse 116 (18 leaves).
52 x 31 cm (writing area: 39 x 20 cm).
Traces of damaged marginal notes, worn and slightly damp-stained edges with later restorations, tears in the text and margins repaired with handwritten facsimiles and any loss of text, visible paper restorations.
The Bihari calligraphic style is typical of northern India after Tamerlane's conquest in the 14th century until the beginning of the Mughal Empire in the 16th century.
