Description
TOYOHARA CHIKANOBU (1838–1912) Kakejiku, ink and colour on silk, depicting a bijin walking through the water of a rice paddy where she sees her reflection; in the background, a pine tree and peasant women bent over, planting rice. Signed ‘Yôshû Chikanobu’ lower right, above a red ‘Yôshû’ seal. (Slight creases). Japan, Meiji period, late 19th century. KAKEJIKU, INK AND COLOURS ON SILK, SIGNED LOWER RIGHT, JAPAN, MEIJI PERIOD, LATE 19TH CENTURY. DIM. 126 X 55.5 CM (49 5/8 X 21 7/8 IN.) Note on the artist: Chikanobu is best known for his woodblock prints and is regarded as one of the last masters of ukiyo-e in the second half of the 19th century, bridging the gap between traditional ukiyo-e and the new shin-hanga movement of the early 20th century. He is recognised as a master of Bijinga – images of beautiful women – which can be seen in this painting.
