Description
ANONYMOUS
A long emakimono in ink, colours and gold powder on paper, depicting the procession of a daimyō travelling along the Nakasendō (the route linking Edo to Kyoto via the north), upon his arrival at the official inn (Honjin) in the post town of Annaka-juku (the 15th post station from Edo, in what is now Gunma Prefecture). The procession is depicted on a scroll measuring 13 metres 60. Judging by the mon (crests) featuring peony flowers visible on some items of equipment, this may be the retinue of the Tsugaru daimyo of Hirosaki Castle in Mutsu. The head of the procession, the front section, the daimyo and his guard are already inside the inn. The entire rear section remains: the porters carrying the numerous pieces of furniture and luggage, the servants, etc., each accompanied by a cartouche indicating their role; the end of the scroll features street scenes in the staging post town. Unsigned.
(Folds, minor soiling, wear from mounting).
