Description
HANABUSA IPPÔ (1691–1760) Kakejiku in ink and light colours on paper, depicting the ‘swordsmiths’ festival’. Signed Ippô, seal: Shimuja. (Stains). Japan, 18th century. AN INK AND COLOURS ON PAPER KAKEJIKU BY HANABUSA IPPÔ, JAPAN, 18TH CENTURY. DIM. 130 X 50 CM (51 3/16 X 19 11/16 IN.) Provenance Formerly in the Barboutau collection. (sale, Paris, 1904). Note In the auction catalogue, Barboutau provides numerous details about this painting. It states that it forms part of a series of twelve, each depicting a festival associated with a particular month of the year. He also notes that all the paintings in this series bear the same signature and the Shimuja seal. He states: “In all these compositions, one clearly recognises the style of our artist’s illustrious father; a blend of the To-sa and Ka-no traditions, to which has been added the humour so characteristic of the Hanabousa school. We are in a street on the day of ‘saï-tan’ (New Year’s Day – February). In front of a house, flanked on either side by ‘matsou’ (pines) and ‘také’ (bamboo), a ‘manzaï’ is dancing, whilst another accompanies him on his ‘taï-ko’ (a sort of tambourine), whilst singing. A child is carrying his little brother on his back; young girls are playing at spinning a top. In the foreground, two other ‘manzai’ are scampering off. It should be noted, however, that Barboutau mistakenly attributed the series to Hanabusa Itchô II, son and pupil of Hanabusa Itchô (1652–1724), whereas it is signed by Ippô, another pupil of Hanabusa Itchô.
