AN INK AND COLOUR KAKEJIKU OF A LANDSCAPE, BY BÔSAI, JAPAN, EARLY 19TH CENTURY.
DIM. 132 X 49.5 CM (52 X 19 1/2 IN.)
About the artist: Bôsai was a Confucian scholar, poet and part-time painter. At the age of 60, he was disavowed by the government for criticising the Neo-Confucianism of Xuzi, which was advocated by the shogunate. He subsequently lost all his pupils and sank into alcoholism. This painting dates from that period.
