Description
SHUNSÔ SHÔJÛ (1751–1835), ATTRIBUTED TO Kakejiku in ink on paper, depicting a bust of Daruma, surmounted by the calligraphic inscription ‘Shirazu’ (‘I do not know’), and signed Shunsô. With its box. (Minor creases and soiling). Japan, Edo period, 18th–19th centuries. AN INK ON PAPER FIGURE OF DARUMA BY SHUNSÔ, JAPAN, EDO PERIOD. DIM. 107 X 31 CM (42 1/8 X 12 3/16 IN.) About the artist: Abbot of Myôshinji in Kyoto, Shunshô was of the Rinzai school, a painter of Zenga and a disciple of Hakuin. Note The phrase ‘I do not know’ refers to Bodhidharma’s (Daruma’s) reply when Emperor Wu of the Liang dynasty asked him, ‘Who, then, is the one standing before me?’, implying that there is no awareness of a separate ‘self’, thereby denying any notion of duality.
