Description
HOKUSAI (1760–1849) SHITA-E FOR A DOUBLE-PAGE ILLUSTRATION PUBLISHED IN SHAKA GO ICHIDAI ZUE Illustrated Biography of Shakyamuni – the Historical Buddha, 1841, vol. 5, ff. 15v–16r. Sumi ink on fine paper. Seal of the collector Hayashi Tadamasa in the lower left-hand corner. (Fading). DIM. 20.6 X 29.7 CM (8 1/8 X 11 11/16 IN.) On Shakyamuni’s orders, his disciple Mangdalyana (Mokuren) comes to rescue Devadatta (Daiba), who has fallen alive into the underworld, where the deities Gôzu and Mezu (with the heads of an ox and a horse, respectively) are depicted. At the end of his first article in the AFJ Bulletin (no. 135), Bernard Rousseau mentions the Curtis Album, which would subsequently be the subject of his second article in the bulletin (no. 139). In particular, he analyses a shita-e for the same work, *Shaka go ichidai zue* (ill. 17, pp. 41 and 43). He writes that this book was published in 1841 but that “its preface states that the drawings had been ready since 1839, and some believe that Hokusai may have been working on them as early as 1835”. This is followed by a fairly detailed study of the shita-e, examining Hokusai’s technique and development based on the date of the shita-e. It is clear from these few lines that at no point does he consider the possibility of another artist’s involvement in the design of the work’s illustrations. Similarly, the two shita-e from this work, which he presents in his second article on the Curtis Album, are solely by Hokusai. Indeed, our shita-e appears to display all the characteristics that are the hallmark of a Hokusai drawing.
