Description
HOKUSAI (1760–1849) SHITA-E FOR AN ILLUSTRATION OF THE KITANO TENMAN-GÛ IN KYOTO Red and black ink on paper, c. 1830–1833. Seal of the collector Hayashi Tadamasa in the lower right-hand corner. DIM. 18.2 X 27.7 CM (7 3/16 X 10 15/16 IN.) Published in: Orientations, ill. 10, p. 90. This drawing perfectly illustrates the change in technique that occurred at the time of, or shortly after, the stroke that struck Hokusai around 1827–1828. Here is what Bernard Rousseau has to say about it: “At the same time, the old working method based on the transparency of the paper was replaced by a new one, which was much simpler to implement. From then on, Hokusai began his drawings by lightly sketching the main elements in red ink, which he then traced directly onto the same drawing using bold black ink. Corrections and alterations were made directly onto the work-in-progress using added pieces that were glued on.” (BAFJ, p. 38).
