Description
HOKUSAI (1760–1849) THREE SHEETS OF ‘ICHIJI SHITA-E’ by Hokusai Collages of sumi ink sketches on fine paper. DIM. 22.7 x 14.5 cm (8 15/16 x 5 11/16 in.) – 23.4 x 15.3 cm (9 3/16 x 6 in.) - 23 × 14.4 cm (9 1/16 × 5 11/16 in.) One of these, featuring a series of small landscapes on a sheet divided into eight rectangles, was published in: *Orientations*, fig. 12, p. 91. Bernard Rousseau writes that, after 1840, Hokusai produced very few prints, and only a few book illustrations. The rare examples of his late drawings are small and appear more laborious. The other sketches depict a monkey’s head, a cockerel and a hen, one of the trees by the water’s edge, a dog, and duck heads. They bear the same small collector’s seals as in the previous lot. Included is a shita-e of a warrior attributed to a pupil of Hokusai, very finely executed. DIM. 19.4 x 6.8 cm (7 5/8 x 2 11/16 in.)
