Description
SET OF TWO PRINTED KAKEJIKU One is a photomechanical reproduction depicting red bamboo, signed by Suichiku Rôtotsu, ‘the taciturn old man drunk on bamboo’; the other is a reproduction of a painting by Tessai. Japan, 20th century. (Folds and soiling on the first, foxing on the second). TWO KAKEJIKU, PRINTED AFTER SUICHIKU AND TESSAI, JAPAN, 20TH CENTURY. DIM. 44 X 51.5 CM (17 5/16 X 20 1/4 IN.) - 132.5 X 30.5 CM (52 3/16 X 12 IN.) Note Yasuda Suichiku (1890–1972), the eldest son of the head priest of Hôkakuji Temple in Funatsuki, became famous for his depictions of red bamboo, a motif symbolising good fortune and prosperity. Tomioka Tessai (1837–1924) was one of the leading painters of the Meiji–Taishō period. The original of the painting reproduced here is held at the Tessai Museum in Takarazuka, Hyōgo Prefecture. This is a self-portrait painted when he was 88 years old. In it, he revisits the Chinese theme of ‘the world in a jar’ (Uchûten in Japanese), referring to a small hidden paradise. The title of the painting is Hyôchû kaitekizu, ‘well-being in a calabash’.
