Estimate €150 - €250
Description
ALBUM OF TEN SMALL PAINTINGS in gouache on mica, depicting figures in various modes of transport: a camel, a cart drawn by buffaloes, a horse, a sedan chair and a palanquin. Mounted on a black background, between two covers bound in black leather. The first page contains a handwritten letter in German, dated Calcutta, 3 February 1863, as is the label affixed to the album. This letter refers to the dispatch of ‘a few Malavainen’ (12 pieces? In which case, two would be missing). The term ‘Malavainen’ is obscure; it may refer to a common ethnic group descended from the Malava. (Some are damaged or have come away from the backing; wear to the covers, which are unbound). DIM. (ALBUM) 20.2 × 27.4 cm (7 15/16 × 10 13/16 in.) - DIM. (PAINTING) 11.4 × 15.6 cm (4 1/2 × 6 1/8 in.)
