Studio of Michel-Marie CARQUILLAT (1803–1884) – 19th-century Lyon School Visit by the Duke of Aumale to the Croix Rousse, to Mr Carquillat’s workshop on 24 August 1841 Woven on silk by Michel-Marie Carquillat, a master weaver from Lyon, after a design by Bonnefond Mounted by A. Manin Dimensions: approx. 105 x 80 cm Michel-Marie Carquillat was one of the most remarkable figures in the Lyon textile industry during the 19th century. Yet he remains relatively unknown today, despite having been a true celebrity in his day. His workshop in the Croix-Rousse district was a must-visit destination for monarchs, princes and foreign travellers who came to discover the wonders of the Jacquard loom.
