Description
Henri Matisse (1869-1954) - Aix-en-Provence Exhibition, 1960. Printed by Mourlot, Paris. Original poster, lithograph. 73x59cm. Not canvas-backed. Condition A-, trace of handling creases. Original poster produced for an exhibition dedicated to Henri Matisse in Aix-en-Provence in 1960. A major figure in modern art, Matisse was one of the main exponents of Fauvism, whose work evolved towards an increasingly radical simplification of form and colour, marked by a search for balance and harmony. The poster, printed by the Mourlot studio in Paris, is part of the great tradition of twentieth-century art lithographs, a field in which Mourlot played a central role alongside the great modern artists. This piece also bears witness to the posthumous dissemination of Matisse's work through the major museum exhibitions organised in France in the 1960s. Our poster features the painting, Le Rêve from 1940, which was shown in several exhibitions, including the 2012 exhibition at the Musée Pompidou entitled Matisse: paires et séries, and earlier, the exhibition at the Pavillon de Vendome, as our poster indicates. In this painting, the young woman who is dreaming is wearing a garment whose motifs are reminiscent of those in La Blouse roumaine, also painted in 1940. This poster was often reproduced, but this one is an original poster from the period.
