Description
Bernard Lorjou (1908-1986) - Exhibition, 1972. Galerie Govaerts, Brussels and on the reverse Galerie Hilton, Brussels. Printer Mourlot, Paris. 65x40cm. Original poster, lithograph. Not canvas-backed. Condition A. Perfect condition. This poster is double-sided, printed for one gallery on the recto and another gallery on the verso. It is therefore a particularly interesting trial print from the Hugon collection. This original poster was produced for an exhibition by Bernard Lorjou in 1972 at the Govaerts gallery in Brussels, a Belgian gallery active in the distribution of post-war European figurative and expressionist painting. A major painter of committed figuration and co-founder in 1948 of the Homme Témoin group alongside Yves Brayer, Lorjou developed a body of work in opposition to the dominant abstract currents, characterised by an energetic pictorial style, vigorously structured forms and a deliberately contrasting palette in the service of an often critical and humanist message. The fact that this poster was printed by the Atelier Mourlot, a key player in art lithography in Paris who worked with artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, adds to its technical and historical interest. The poster is part of a network of Franco-Belgian artistic exchanges in the early 1970s, during which Brussels was an active intermediary for the French figurative art scene.
