Description
Flanders, after David Teniers the Younger (Antwerp, 1610 – Brussels, 1690), 18th/19th century. A wax plaque carved in bas-relief depicting the Temptation of Saint Anthony. In the centre, the hermit stands in prayer before an altar on which rest a book, a skull and a crucifix. He is besieged by an elegant young woman holding out a cup to him, accompanied by a matchmaker, whilst hybrid demons and toads surround him. The sky is filled with witches riding flying fish, aquatic and fish-like creatures, and bats. Flanders, after David Teniers the Younger (Antwerp, 1610 – Brussels, 1690), 18th/19th century. Dimensions: 35 x 43 cm (we would need the dimensions without the frame if possible) In a frame with a glass cover The subject of this print originates from the triptych painted by Hieronymus Bosch around 1501, which subsequently inspired numerous artists such as Bruegel, Jan Mandijn, Pieter Huys and their followers, right up to Jan Wellens de Cock. The composition here is directly inspired by the paintings by David Teniers the Younger, notably the one held at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo (inv. P.1991-0002) or at the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden (inv. 1079). No wax bas-relief reproducing a 17th-century painting appears to be recorded in public collections. Expert: Cabinet Fligny, Paris.
