Description
A pair of panels from a two-part piece in walnut carved in bas-relief, adorned with green marble plaques, featuring a design of nymphs, sphinxes and allegorical figures trampling on weapons: Peace on the left, holding an olive branch in one hand and a torch in the other, with which she is burning a shield. Victory on the right, brandishing a closed royal crown surmounted by a fleur-de-lis. Île-de-France, late 16th century Dimensions: 73 x 30.5 cm (one marble plaque cracked, ventilation holes on the reverse) The allegory of Peace is probably inspired by the engraving by Etienne Delaune, dated before 1573 and re-engraved in 1575. Expert: Cabinet Fligny, Paris.
