Description
VEUILLOT (Louis) – *Les Odeurs de Paris*. Paris, Palmé, 1867. First edition or one of the early printings from the Second Empire. Contains an autograph letter from the author to Abbé Darras (9 July 1866). Green shagreen half-binding, ribbed spine by FOCK, Frédéric Fock, born in Meldorf (Schleswig-Holstein) in 1812 and died in Paris in 1884. He practised, notably, at 28 Rue Mazarine in Paris. His high-quality artistic bindings (often signed ‘FOCK’ at the bottom of the covers or pages) are highly sought after by bibliophiles. Ex-libris by Jean LARTEGUY.
Abbé Jean-Étienne Darras (1826–1878), Vicar General of Nancy and Nevers, was an ecclesiastical historian renowned for his vast body of work in popularising religious subjects.
The most famous book by the greatest Catholic polemicist of the nineteenth century, brimming with scandalous anecdotes. Veuillot apparently sought to demonstrate that Paris, ‘which is regarded as the capital of the world, is a foul cesspit…’ The first two parts of the book are devoted to the press, whilst the third part deals with Parisian entertainment, theatres, café-concerts, etc. This work provoked the strongest protests around the world and in the newspapers due to the violent content it contained. The volume sold out within a few hours and was in high demand on the very evening it went on sale. It was reprinted, but with alterations and omissions. (Lacombe, no. 1144). Key figures: ‘Pachionnard d’Auvergne’ stands for Jules Vallès; ‘Zora’ for Cora Pearl; ‘Saint-Rémy’ for the Duke of Morny; ‘Lilia’ for George Sand; Champfleury and the Realists—Fromentin, Gautier and Hugo—appear here under various pseudonyms. (Vicaire, VII, 1026.)
