VIEL-CASTEL (Count Horace de) – Memoirs on the Reign of Napoleon III (1851–1864), published from the original manuscript. Paris, available from all booksellers, 1883–1884. 6 volumes. Contemporary red half-shagreen binding, ribbed and gilt spine – First edition. Provenance: Mr Goudeket’s sale, 11 March 1961. Ex-libris by Jean LARTEGUY. A curator at the Louvre and a fervent defender of Napoleon III, Count Horace de Viel-Castel described in these Memoirs the political life and society of the Second Empire. His highly authentic account is strongly marked by the animosity he displayed towards his adversaries, including Prince Napoleon and Victor Hugo. Formerly in the collection of Jean LARTEGUY, acquired by the estate of Mrs L.
