Description
Dictionary of Weathercocks – Paris, Alexis EYMERY, 1815. Contemporary calfskin binding (damage to the clamps, signs of wear, as is). Ex-libris by Jean LARTEGUY.
This is a satirical and biographical work cataloguing the political about-turns of over 700 prominent figures (politicians, men of letters, civil servants and military officers) who successively served the Revolution, the Directory, the Consulate, the Empire and the Restoration. It is adorned with an allegorical colour frontispiece depicting a figure in uniform pointing to a weather-vane-shaped dial bearing multiple banners (including the famous ironic motto in the caption: ‘If the plague paid pensions, the plague would still find flatterers and courtiers’).
Formerly in the collection of Jean LARTEGUY, acquired through the estate of Mrs L.
