Pigments and gold on paper
Turkey, 18th century
This fine tughra belongs to Sultan Ahmed III and bears his title ‘Shah Ahmed bin Mehmed Shah Khan al-Muzaffar daima’. The composition bears the date 1135 H. (1722–23 AD) and mentions the name of Mustafa Pasha, the sub-governor (kaymakam) of Istanbul, in the lower left-hand corner. The Tughra is drawn in black ink at the centre of the composition and illuminated with floral motifs in gold (tezhip). The margins feature cartouches adorned with pretty polychrome bouquets against a gold background. A chevron frieze frames the composition, which is set in an antique gilded wooden frame.
