Description
Scottie Wilson (Scottish, 1888–1972)
‘Swans and Castles’ tableware set
Ceramic.
48 pieces comprising: a teapot, six cups and saucers, a tray, a ladle, five bowls and dishes, sixteen small plates (various sizes), twelve plates and an egg cup.
Signed and marked ‘Royal Worcester Crownware England’.
Various sizes.
Provenance: the collection of Laurent Danchin (1946–2017), writer, essayist and art critic, passed down through the family.
Born in Glasgow into a poor family, Louis Freeman left school at the age of eight to sell newspapers. After emigrating to Toronto, he ran a second-hand shop there and, once he had passed the age of forty, began drawing with pen and ink. Flowers, birds and malevolent figures—the ‘Greedies’ and the ‘Evils’—make up a moral universe in which evil stands in opposition to nature.
