Description
Scottie Wilson (Scottish, 1888–1972) SSW – A/20 Ink and coloured pencils. Exhibition label on the reverse: ‘The London Gallery Limited’ no. 224, LG collection. Height 27.5, width 18.7 cm. Provenance: - Arnaud Lefebvre Gallery, 3,500 francs, 1992; - collection of Laurent Danchin (1946–2017), writer, essayist and art critic, passed down through the family. Born in Glasgow into a poor family, Louis Freeman left school at the age of eight to sell newspapers. After emigrating to Toronto, he ran a second-hand shop there and, in his forties, began drawing in pen and ink. Flowers, birds and malevolent figures – the ‘Greedies’ and the ‘Evils’ – make up a moral universe in which evil is pitted against nature.
