Description
Alain Lacoste (French, 1935–2022)
‘What can be seen from the Rome observatory’
Bas-relief, assemblage of wood, fabric and paint.
Signed and dated on the reverse, April 2000.
Height 70, Width 47 cm.
Provenance: the collection of Laurent Danchin (1946–2017), writer, essayist and art critic, passed down through the family.
Born in Laval, he was set on a career in teaching before a stay in a psychiatric hospital turned his life on its head; his encounter with Robert Tatin proved decisive. Alain Lacoste transforms reclaimed wood and stone into bas-reliefs populated by intertwined figures and animals, combining graphic design, colour and wordplay. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of French ‘art singulier’.
